Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
