Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
