Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
